Forum: GratefulDead Subject: What is on the JGB "Shining Star" album ?

I am going through my Garcia stuff , and the "Shining Star " album lists the contents as coming from shows from 89-93 . Not exactly precise ...
So , does any one know WHICH shows these came from ?

I've had that picture on my refrigerator for 15 years. I wonder if my daughter knows she's been published?

That is really funny. Facially it looks like a cross between Jerry and Grisman. The body looks like a cross between Jerry and Brian Urlacher, if the only Jerry in the mix is the black T.

I hope this doesn't come as a major disappointment to you, but I don't read every thread here and i can't say i recall every discussion that you and Robert have had.

I thought he was from New Mexico, which is close El Paso which is a song that was even played in the curmudgeon era so that is a possibility.

Huge! Huge shock...dismay...heartbreaking really.

Ah well.

You're on the right track, weedhopper: NM it is. Tucumcari (thought you might have been in on that thread about "Willin'" that Rob likes so much; the towns ref'd in it? Only makes sense if you know the tune. I love Linda R's version).

Anyhow, I only think of it everytime I hear about BUr cause it's the only podunk town in the middle of nowhere that you see billboards (in my exp anyhooo) with his pic saying "he's OUR boy!" or some such...I've been thru a time or two (NE NM on rte 40--historic rte 66) while chasing lizards...otherwise, I'd never have known (though subsequently I think I've heard them mention it on the tube while watching Bears' games...?).

El Paso was a good guess given the context.

Love the song and if the thread discusses that it was that song that got Lowell George kicked out of the Mothers, then i might have a faint recollection of it.

Good afternoon Dudley - I never knew such an album existed. I just did a 25-minute stair master workout this morning to the 11/19/93 version of Shining Star (from the ~8cd Garcia Compilation that I found somewhere on the web). Beautiful, sweet stuff...

Sounds pretty sad that my exercise only lasted one tune, but at least it was a JERRY track, right?

I was one of those 2 "Garcia family" single disc releases, the other being "How Sweet it is", taken form the same Warfield shows as the JGB live album .

The information about what song comes from what dates has never been released by any of the Garcia vault people, and it wasn't in the original notes.

The only way to find out will be to A-B the tracks with what circulates from other sources. Shining Star is a great listen, so that wouldn't be much of a chore, but it'd take some time. Anyone want to volunteer?

That said, there are some JGB shows from the 1989-1993 time period that are not, AFAIK, in circulation. They are the following:

March 1, 1990
March 2, 1990
May 22, 1991

Everything is available at the usual places such as Lossless Legs, bt.etree.org, etc.

Ha ha, no magic bullet ! So odd to cover such a long range of time . It's is like someone's mix tape . I wonder who's baby/ idea this was ? And why not credit which shows ?
I wonder if they plan to do any more of the "Pure Jerry" series ? While they sometimes mix shows together , they are from the same period, and they at least tell you which night it was .
Thanks .

The inspiration and decision making behind Shining Star was primarily Deborah Koons, I believe.

I have the MP-3 version of this album lying around here. Not bad for a commercial release either. It doesn't matter if every song is from the same show or not. This is the work of the Garcia estate (Debbie Koons) and not GDM or Rhino.

Beats the fuck outta listening to Sarah Palin and those other idiots babbling on about Arizona..

Just about everything "Beats the fuck outta listening to Sarah Palin and those other idiots babbling on about Arizona.."
I like the cd, but it is odd how , in this era of better documentation, that, it was put out with none . It's not like you just grabbed a few shows and quickly cooked up a cd, someone had to dig , and do some serious listening to put it together .
And the JGB live set, and "How sweet it is", though a little better,( we know the year, and runs ) , is still sort of needlessly vague on the actual dates .
Was this vagueness, carelessness, haste, or a deliberate decision ?
